Once the greatest manufacturing center in the world, the city of Detroit is now literally burning itself to the ground. And even though Alex McKnight was sworn to serve and protect the city as a police officer, a trip to Motown these days is a trip to a past he'd just as soon forget. So he's more than happy to stay in the little town of Paradise, three hundred miles and half a lifetime away.

But then he gets a call from his old sergeant. It turns out that Darryl King, a young man he helped put away in his last month on the job, will be getting out of prison. The same man who brutally murdered a woman at the train station, about to walk free. When the sergeant invites him downstate to have a drink for old times' sake, it's an offer that Alex would normally refuse. But there's a certain female FBI agent Alex can't stop thinking about. So he gets in his truck and he goes back to Detroit.

As he stands looking at the ruins of the old train station, he thinks back to that one big case that marked the highlight of his career, before his partner was killed, before his marriage fell apart, before he had to leave Detroit forever.

And he realizes, all these years later, that everything he thought he knew about Darryl King might have been wrong from the beginning.

It's not something anyone wants to hear, certainly not the old detective who was in charge of the case, but Alex can't let go of this gut feeling that they arrested the wrong man.

And that the real killer not only got away, but went on to kill again.

And again.

And again.
